This volume of Encyclopaedia Islamica is the sixth of a projected 16-volume set, largely consisting of an abridged and edited translation of the Persian D幣irat al-Ma平rif-i Buzurg-i Islm朝, one of the most comprehensive sources on Islam and the Muslim world, to which a number of original articles, written specifically for the English edition, have been added. One of the unique features of this work of reference lies in the attention it gives to Shi平i Islam and its rich and diverse heritage, which makes it complementary to other encyclopaedias. In addition to providing entries on important themes, subjects and personages in Islam generally, it offers the Western reader an opportunity to appreciate the various dimensions of Shi平i Islam, the Persian contributions to Islamic civilisation, and the spiritual dimensions of the Islamic tradition.
This volume contains biographical articles on a number of major Muslim scholars such as the great philosopher and polymath, Ab笛 Na畊r Mu畍ammad 温鉛-酷偵姻偵恢朝, as well as the 9th/15th-century Persian philosopher, theologian and gnostic, Jall al-禽朝稼 al-Dwan朝. It also includes historical surveys of important concepts in Islam, such as 糸温平敬温Lit. ‘summons’, ‘mission’ or invitation to Islam. Amongst Shi’i Muslims, it was the invitation to adopt the cause of the Imamat. It also refers more specifically to the hierarchy of… and 糸朝稼, and of religious groups such as the DruzeA religious community that arose as an offshoot of the Fatimid Ismailis around 408 AH/1017 CE.. In terms of the traditions of Sufism, there are articles on Dr Shuk笛h, 温鉛-禽温壊笛援朝, Ab笛 al-畍asan al-Daylam朝 and Dh笛 al-N笛n al-Mi畊r朝. Persian social and architectural history are discussed in articles such as 糸庄鞄援偵稼 and the Fahraj Congregational Mosque. The volume also includes entries of considerable importance for the study of Shi平ism, such as those on Fadak and the Fatimid dynasty, as well as a comprehensive article on 酷偵畊i馨温, the wife of Imam 平Al朝 and daughter of the Prophet Mu畍ammad, and as such revered by all Muslims, especially the Shi平a Muslims.
